Innovative Use of Cow Manure Biogas Powers Data Centers in New York

In a groundbreaking development, a dairy farm in New York, USA, has become the first in the world to use cow manure to generate biogas for powering data centers. This initiative is a collaboration between Lent Hill Dairy Farm and Ag-Grid Energy, marking a significant advancement in the dairy economy and circular bioeconomy.

The project involves the transformation of bovine waste and food residues into renewable natural gas (RNG) that directly powers cryptocurrency data centers located on the farm premises. This marks the first instance in the United States where RNG is directly integrated into digital infrastructure.

To achieve this, two large anaerobic digesters have been installed, capable of processing over 170,000 liters of cow manure daily into pure biogas. Traditionally, such biogas is used for electricity, rural heating, or as clean fuel for heavy transportation, but its application in powering data centers is unprecedented.

Rashi Akki, founder and CEO of Ag-Grid Energy, highlighted the scalability of this circular economy model, suggesting that it could be successfully implemented in medium-scale farms across the continent. The technical expansion strategy aims to support small data processing centers while enhancing rural connectivity for artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms through the deployment of fiber optic networks.

Industry reports indicate that large processing centers will soon require significant volumes of clean energy, positioning biogas as a highly reliable and capable energy source.
