India will launch its livestock insurance portal in New Delhi on September 28

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying will introduce the Livestock Insurance Portal at Chandralok Bhawan in New Delhi. Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, the Union minister for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying and panchayati raj, is scheduled to attend as chief guest. S.P. Singh Baghel, minister of state for the same portfolios, and Naresh Pal Gangwar, the department’s secretary, are scheduled to attend as guests of honour.

The portal is being developed as a web-based workflow for livestock insurance under the National Livestock Mission. Government statements have identified transparency, monitoring and claim processing as areas the system is intended to support. Other functions cited include claim tracking, grievance redressal and the timely settlement of claims.

Livestock insurance under the mission covers financial losses connected with the death of insured animals. Eligible animals include indigenous and crossbred milch animals, pack animals, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, yak and mithun. The programme forms part of the mission’s Research and Development, Livestock Insurance, Extension and Innovation sub-mission and is implemented across districts.

Under the current framework, beneficiaries pay 15% of the insurance premium, while the Centre and states jointly fund the remaining 85%. Subsidised coverage has been extended to as many as 10 cattle units per beneficiary household for most eligible animals. Separate limits apply to pigs and rabbits.

Government documents have also referred to the possible use of radio-frequency identification tagging to improve animal identification and assist claim settlement. The new digital interface is expected to cover registration, insurance coverage and related protection services, while giving beneficiaries access to information through an online system.

Government data cited for the programme’s latest five-year reference period records 60.80 lakh insured animals. During the same period, ₹161.07 crore was released under the scheme. The September 28 event is scheduled to provide further information on the portal’s operating features, coverage and implementation arrangements.
