From March to July 2025, the agricultural workforce in the U.S. declined by 7%, with labor shortages reported across states regardless of their political leanings. These shortages pose a threat to national food security, as highlighted by recent reports.
Idaho, where about 60% of voters are registered Republicans and 67% supported Trump in the 2024 elections, presents a unique case study of how national immigration policies resonate locally. Despite the state's conservative political landscape, local public opinion appears to diverge significantly from the national rhetoric.
Public Opinion on Immigration
The 11th annual Idaho Public Policy Survey, conducted in the fall of 2025, surveyed 1,000 adults regarding their views on immigration. The survey revealed that 85% supported a pathway to legal working status for long-term immigrant residents, particularly dairy workers and their families. This support transcended political affiliations, with 79% of Republicans, 88% of independents, and 95% of Democrats in favor.
Furthermore, more than half of the respondents, 53%, believed that increased enforcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would harm Idaho's agricultural economy. Only 19% thought it would be beneficial, while 18% saw no impact, and 10% were uncertain.
The survey results suggest a growing recognition among Idaho residents of the crucial role immigrant workers play in sustaining local economies. This recognition could potentially shift attitudes towards more inclusive immigration policies, reflecting a nuanced public opinion that defies the traditional partisan divide.
