Historic Quebec Cheese Brand OKA Sold to French Giant Lactalis
The renowned Quebec cheese brand OKA, with a history exceeding 130 years, is being acquired by the French cheese industry leader Lactalis. The Quebec co-operative Agropur, which previously owned OKA, is selling its fine cheese division to Lactalis. This transaction includes the acquisition of two production facilities located in Oka and Sainte-Hyacinthe, Quebec, and the addition of approximately 400 employees to Lactalis' existing workforce of 4,500 in Canada.
Emmanuel Besnier, chairman of the Lactalis Group, emphasized their dedication to maintaining the authenticity and quality of these award-winning cheeses. Besnier also highlighted their commitment to participating actively in the communities of Oka and Sainte-Hyacinthe.
Guillaume Bérubé, Agropur's director of communications, noted that the decision to sell was not taken lightly but was necessary. He assured that employees would retain their jobs and pointed out that Lactalis already has a substantial presence in Canada, with significant expertise in fine cheese production.
Bérubé mentioned that the fine cheese market is highly competitive, and Agropur aims to enhance its competitiveness by focusing on protein sectors. He revealed that fine cheese production accounted for only two percent of Agropur's revenue and milk processing.
OKA cheese originated in 1893, created by Brother Alphonse Juin, a French master cheesemaker who joined a Trappist community in Oka. The cheese played a crucial role in supporting the financially challenged monks and became a culinary staple known for its fruity flavor and medium intensity.
The recipe for OKA cheese was sold to Agropur in 1981. The cheese has since gained recognition as an award-winning product, maintaining its significance in Quebec's culinary history.
