Heritage Foods Defends 'Fresh Paneer' Label Against FSSAI Scrutiny

Heritage Foods Ltd, a major player in the Indian dairy industry, has formally responded to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regarding concerns over its use of the term 'Fresh Paneer' on product packaging. The FSSAI had issued a show-cause notice, suggesting that the term could mislead consumers. In its defense, Heritage Foods argues that the label is purely descriptive and accurately represents the nature of paneer as a perishable dairy product.

The company explains that its paneer is made from fresh, pasteurized milk and is immediately packaged under strict hygienic conditions, emphasizing the product's need for continuous refrigeration. Heritage Foods highlights that 'Fresh Paneer' differentiates its product from other variants that may involve dehydration or freezing, asserting that this distinction is crucial for consumer awareness.

Heritage Foods also points out that the term 'Fresh Paneer' is commonly used across the Indian dairy processing sector for similar products, indicating that it is a recognized industry standard. The company further clarifies that all necessary statutory information is present on the packaging, including manufacturing and expiry dates, as well as storage guidelines, to ensure informed purchasing decisions.

Additionally, the company addressed the FSSAI's observations regarding its corporate slogan 'Health and Happiness.' Heritage Foods explained that the slogan reflects its broader philosophy and is not intended as a specific health claim about the paneer.

Heritage Foods expressed its appreciation for the FSSAI's regulatory role, reaffirming its commitment to compliance with food safety standards and transparent labeling practices. The company has urged the FSSAI to consider its detailed submission in this context.
