Global Dairy Market Faces Challenges Amid Rising Production and Trade Dynamics

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported a 2.3% increase in milk production compared to the previous year, attributed to an expansion in the American dairy herd, which reached a record 9.665 million cows. In the first five months of 2026 alone, the U.S. herd grew by 99,000 cows, and average production per cow increased to 2,128 pounds, eight pounds more than the previous year.

This expansion in domestic supply is contrasted by strong international demand. In April, U.S. dairy exports reached 258,049 tons, marking a 17% increase compared to April 2025. This growth in exports was primarily driven by butter and cheese sales, with cheese shipments reaching a historic high of 64,168 tons, a 30% increase from the same period last year.

Despite the robust export capabilities, the U.S. market faces challenges in balancing rising production with pressured prices. As of the end of May, cheese inventories in cold storage stood at 1.423 billion pounds, a 1% decrease from the previous year, while butter stocks were recorded at 335.601 million pounds, 8% lower than May of the previous year.

In New Zealand, another major player in the global dairy trade, the focus is on the economic value retained within the country from its exports. Agriculture accounts for approximately 85% of New Zealand's export revenues, with the dairy sector contributing 30% of these exports. However, there is an ongoing debate about the sector's contribution to the country's GDP and fiscal revenues, questioning whether increased production translates to greater economic value across the industry.

The broader global dairy market is entering a phase where productivity, trade, and value generation are being scrutinized from new perspectives. While increased production remains a competitive advantage, there is concern that an oversupply could lead to market pressures if demand does not keep pace.
