Genetic Testing Fuels Growth in Brazil's A2 Milk and Buffalo Dairy Sectors

In Brazil, the production of A2 milk is expanding through the application of genetic testing and public initiatives. Producers are utilizing genetic examinations to identify cows with the potential to produce A2 milk, allowing them to confirm these genetic traits in their herds before the milking process begins.

In Novo Horizonte, a public program has been implemented to distribute A2 milk to local creches, hospitals, and other public institutions. Currently, approximately 10,000 liters of A2 milk are allocated for this purpose, with technical monitoring of the outcomes. Aníbal Vercesi Filho, a researcher, notes that neighboring cities are beginning to take inspiration from this initiative.

The Institute of Animal Science plays a key role in the growth of the A2 milk sector by participating in the certification of all buffalo dairy products in Brazil. This includes not only traditional dairy products but also new offerings such as buffalo milk powder.

Genetic testing is also crucial in the buffalo dairy industry. It helps identify animals with favorable traits for producing milk that is more suitable for cheese production, potentially increasing cheese yield by up to 10%.

The institute views public certification as a technical alternative to validate products, enhance consumer trust, and facilitate market access. In a market segment driven by differentiation, proving the authenticity of products is essential for building value.
