Fuel Price Drops Bring Relief to Milk Producers in Rio Grande do Sul

The recent reduction in international oil prices, influenced by geopolitical developments such as easing tensions in the Middle East and improved logistics through the Strait of Hormuz, has resulted in a 23% drop in oil prices. This decrease has directly impacted fuel prices, providing relief to the logistics chain of dairy farming in Rio Grande do Sul.

Despite these reductions, the practical effect on dairy farmers' expenses varies. Many producers had previously secured inputs at higher prices due to prolonged uncertainties in the international market. As a result, the decline in global prices is not universally beneficial.

The Federação da Agricultura do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (Farsul) anticipates that the downward trend in input costs may not continue. For July, an increase in the inflation index for dairy production is expected, driven by rising grain prices, especially corn and soybeans.

Fuel prices are expected to remain stable, while fertilizers have seen price adjustments due to the resumption of Chinese urea exports. Over the past 12 months, the inflation index for dairy products and derivatives has already climbed by 10.06%, reflecting the varied dynamics between production costs and price adjustments along the supply chain.

On the revenue side, the Parity Council of Milk Producers and Industries of Rio Grande do Sul (Conseleite/RS) announced a reference milk price for July of R$ 2.5005 per liter, representing a 2.98% increase from June's projection of R$ 2.4281 per liter.

The council also confirmed June's consolidated price at R$ 2.4320 per liter. This alignment of lower input costs and higher milk prices has temporarily favored producers' margins, although the impact remains uneven and depends on when each producer purchased their inputs.
