Former Open Country Dairy Manager Admits to Receiving $250,000 in Kickbacks
Simon Stewart, who previously managed market operations for Open Country Dairy, has admitted to accepting kickbacks amounting to more than $250,000. The admission was made in the Manukau District Court, where Stewart pleaded guilty to a representative charge under section 4 of the Secret Commissions Act 1910, which pertains to the acceptance of gifts by an agent.
The charge arose following an investigation by New Zealand's Serious Fraud Office (SFO). The investigation revealed that Stewart had provided assistance and shared commercially sensitive pricing information with PT. Anta Tirta Kirana, an Indonesian-based customer of Open Country Dairy.
Open Country Dairy, owned by Talley's Group, is a significant player in the dairy processing industry. The court proceedings highlighted the breach of trust and the exploitation of Stewart’s position within the company.
The SFO's inquiry into Stewart’s conduct underscores the regulatory focus on maintaining integrity within New Zealand's business sectors. The revelation of such activities has prompted discussions about corporate governance and compliance within the dairy industry.
The case against Stewart represents a broader initiative by authorities to clamp down on fraudulent activities and ensure transparency in business dealings. The outcome of the court case may prompt other companies to review their internal policies to prevent similar incidents.
