Explosion at Magħtab Fireworks Factory Causes Animal Losses and Structural Damage
On Monday morning, an explosion occurred at the Ta' Lourdes fireworks factory located on Triq tal-Qagħdi in Magħtab. The blast, which happened at approximately 6:35 am, was powerful enough to be heard from several kilometers away, causing widespread damage including shattered windows and dislodged building façades in the vicinity.
The explosion resulted in the death of various animals including birds, rabbits, and dairy cows, as reported by Jeanette of the MaYA Foundation. Farmers and breeders in the surrounding area have reported structural damages to their farms as a consequence of the blast.
The MaYA Foundation, actively engaging with those affected, has emphasized the significant impact on the local farming community. It highlighted that these animals represent not only financial investments but years of dedication and emotional commitment for the farming families.
Emergency services, including the police, the Civil Protection Department, and the Armed Forces of Malta, remain at the site to secure the area and ensure public safety. The public has been advised to avoid the area until it is declared safe.
The foundation expressed solidarity with those affected and called for immediate support from relevant authorities to assess and address the damages. It further expressed gratitude towards the emergency services for their prompt response.
