Dairy Advocates Lobby for Agricultural Labor Reform on Capitol Hill

Recently, a group of dairy advocates convened on Capitol Hill to press for legislative action on agricultural labor reform. The event was part of a broader effort led by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and involved more than three dozen participants, including farmers and industry leaders from across the United States. The discussions were part of a two-day meeting organized by state dairy associations.

According to Doug Holland, the president of the North Carolina Dairy Producers Association, agricultural labor stands out as a crucial issue for the agricultural sector. The legislative proposal supported by the dairy advocates is the Securing Agriculture’s Workforce Act, which the NMPF describes as a landmark reform for the agricultural workforce.

The proposed legislation aims to provide dairy farmers with improved access to the H-2A program, the primary visa program for agricultural labor. One of the key features of the bill is the removal of the seasonal restrictions that currently apply to the program, allowing for contracts of up to 350 days per year.

Furthermore, the bill seeks to streamline the application process for the H-2A visa, addressing cost-related concerns that have been barriers for many farmers. It also introduces measures to facilitate the transition of the current dairy workforce to the H-2A program, ensuring a smoother integration into the visa framework.

As the discussions on Capitol Hill continue, the dairy industry is keenly focused on the outcomes of this legislative push, which they believe is vital for securing the future of agricultural labor in the sector.
