According to the Index DIA application,  a key factor in the decline in the index was a decrease in the share of imports in the calculation of the indicator and a decrease in the price of imports due to the strengthening of the ruble, while prices for raw milk in Russian regions continued to grow.

The import price index decreased by 0.39% to 35.44 rubles (about 0.40 euros)/kg, compared to February 2020 the index is higher by 10.24%. The key growth factor in the decline was the strengthening of the ruble and the decrease in prices for exchange-traded dairy products. At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade the price of skimmed milk powder decreased, the price of whey powder, and cheese remained at the level of the previous auction. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble compared to the previous auction, decreased by 1.63% to 326.45 rubles (about 3.64 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar decreased to 295.15 rubles (about 3.29 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder decreased by 3.7% to 210.2 rubles (about 2.35 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder decreased to 82.3 rubles (about 0.92 euros)/kg.

DIA analysts have updated data on the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products according to the latest statistics of the Federal Customs Service. The volume of imports of skimmed milk powder, whole milk powder and whey powder increased, while the volume of imports of butter and cheese decreased. In calculating the import price, the share of the most expensive pair of skimmed milk powder + butter and the share of whole milk powder increased, while the share of the pair of cheese + whey decreased. The share of import price in calculating DIA Dairy Index decreased from 31.6% to 29.39% amid lower imports and higher production of milk, which became a factor in the declining Dairy Index DIA.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter decreased by 1.22% to 37.23 rubles (about 0.42 euros)/kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey decreased by 0.27% to 33.85 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder remained at the level of 27.48 rubles (about 0.31 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
