Cuban Ubre Blanca Cow Set Milk Production Records in 1982
In 1982, a cow named Ubre Blanca from Cuba set a world record by producing 110 liters of milk in a single day, as recognized by the Guinness World Records. This extraordinary achievement was the result of crossbreeding between Dutch cattle and zebu breeds adapted to tropical climates. The intention behind these genetic experiments was to combine high milk production with heat resistance.
Ubre Blanca became a national symbol in Cuba, with her image appearing in institutional campaigns, educational materials, newspapers, and on postage stamps. The cow was kept under close supervision by veterinarians and technicians, housed in climate-controlled facilities, and subjected to rigorous feeding protocols.
Despite the remarkable success of Ubre Blanca, the broader goal of developing a population of cattle with similar performance was not realized. Though she had offspring, none matched her milk production records. The project aimed to create a sustainable and replicable system of high-producing cattle, but this objective was not achieved.
Ubre Blanca passed away in 1985 due to a tumor, and her death was widely mourned in Cuba. The official newspaper Granma dedicated a full-page obituary to her, and a statue was erected in her honor. Her body was preserved for research purposes.
Today, Ubre Blanca's story continues to capture interest for its insights into the challenges of livestock production. The Cuban project highlighted the ongoing challenge in modern animal husbandry: balancing productivity with environmental adaptation. While genetic improvement programs today use more advanced tools, they still strive for the same goals of predictability, structured selection, and cumulative gains across generations.
More than four decades after Ubre Blanca's records, her legacy remains a reminder of the complexities involved in transforming an exceptional individual performance into an efficient, sustainable, and scalable agricultural system.
