Cornwall Dairy Farms Struggle with Rising Production Costs

Dairy farms in Cornwall are experiencing significant financial pressure as production costs rise. At Tremore Dairy near Bodmin, farmers Dan and Liz Nattle manage a herd of 260 cattle, including Friesians and Ayrshires. Dan Nattle described their situation as mentally and physically draining, highlighting that the milk price only just covers production costs.

Currently, the Nattles receive 34p per litre for their milk. Liz Nattle noted that their low-cost farming system, which relies heavily on grazed grass instead of purchased feed, helps manage expenses. However, she emphasized that they are at the brink of profitability.

Many dairy farmers in the southwest of England face similar challenges. Some report that their production costs exceed the milk prices by 10p, which intensifies the financial strain. These circumstances have left farmers questioning the sustainability of their operations.
