Calls for Dairy Industry Reform Highlighted During Trump’s Wisconsin Visit

President Trump attended an agricultural roundtable event in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on June 5th, where he interacted with farmers and Republican representatives. During the event, Trump recounted a previous meeting with producers, highlighting their preference for a 'level playing field' over subsidies. The session briefly touched upon dairy policies amid broader discussions.

Current Dairy Industry Challenges

Secretary Rollins mentioned potential trade deals to boost exports, while Representative Derrick Van Orden highlighted the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, aimed at reinstating whole and reduced-fat milk options in schools. Despite these initiatives, the dairy sector faces significant hurdles. Farm Bureau data reveals that while dairy export value has doubled since 2016, the number of licensed dairy herds has dramatically decreased from over 40,000 to under 25,000.

Proposed Reforms

Trump's visit coincides with the ongoing discussions around the Farm Bill in Congress, which could include crucial reforms for the dairy industry. A central proposal is the Milk from Family Dairies Act (MFDA), crafted by the National Family Farm Coalition and supported by over 90 organizations. The MFDA proposes a supply management system akin to Canada's, aiming to ensure farmers receive compensation that at least covers production costs.

Under the MFDA, stakeholders would regularly meet to balance consumer supply demands with pricing for farmers, potentially reducing the need for taxpayer-funded subsidies. Additionally, the Act proposes investments in local dairy processors to foster competition, which could lead to lower consumer prices.

Financial Struggles and Consumer Impact

Since 2021, dairy farmers have struggled to sell milk at a profit due to rising feed, seed, and fertilizer costs, even when expanding herd sizes. The MFDA aims to alleviate these financial pressures by providing fair compensation. For consumers, the Act's emphasis on anti-trust enforcement seeks to prevent price-gouging by large retailers, ensuring better prices at grocery stores.
