Brazilian Milk Production Hits Record Amid Global Market Fluctuations

Brazil's milk industry has experienced significant growth, with the average national milk collection reaching a record 76 million liters per day over the 12 months ending in March 2026. This marks an 8% increase and is detailed in the July report by the Milk Intelligence Center (CILeite) affiliated with Embrapa Dairy Cattle.

The increase in production has been accompanied by favorable economic conditions for producers. In May, the average price received by producers was R$ 2.64 per liter, with payment made in June. Indicators from Conseleites suggest that this price trend may continue in the short term. The stability in production costs and improved trade conditions have enabled this growth without negatively impacting producer incomes.

Domestic consumption of milk and dairy products has been sufficiently robust to absorb the increased supply, contributing to a balanced market. However, international factors present challenges. Global milk production is also on the rise in key regions such as the European Union, the United States, and New Zealand, as well as in Argentina and Uruguay, Brazil's Mercosur partners.

Despite the steady increase in global supply, recent Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auctions have shown a decline in prices, with one auction recording a 4.9% drop, the largest decrease of the year. This international volatility is a point of concern, particularly regarding imports.

Brazil's dairy import activities have intensified recently, with June seeing an import equivalent of 211 million liters of milk, a 35.2% increase compared to June 2025. According to Embrapa, the interplay of import rates, production costs, and domestic market absorption capacity will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of Brazil's dairy sector.

As the sector strengthens, it remains sensitive to external market movements that could quickly alter the current equilibrium.
