Baja California Sur Mobilizes Efforts to Combat Prolonged Drought

In response to severe drought conditions affecting Baja California Sur, the Secretariat of Fishing, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPADA), in partnership with municipal authorities and local producers, has launched a strategic plan to support the livestock sector.

José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, head of SEPADA, announced that more than 3.3 million pesos have been allocated for the distribution of food to livestock herds across the region. The plan includes the execution of forage planting in strategic areas, aiming to cover approximately 300 hectares to produce 12,000 tons of forage for distribution.

Strategic Forage Planting

Key locations identified for this initiative include areas in the Vizcaíno, Mulegé municipality, the Santo Domingo Valley in Comondú, and several precincts in La Paz such as Ejidos Chametla, El Centenario, and Los Planes, among others. These efforts are aimed at ensuring no farmer is left unsupported.

Bermúdez Beltrán stressed that each hectare would receive support amounting to 20,000 pesos, with harvests expected to be ready within 60 days, thereby providing timely relief to struggling producers.

Ongoing Dialogue with Farmers

Further meetings are planned within all five municipalities to engage directly with livestock producers, addressing their concerns and requirements to enhance survival strategies amidst the drought. The initiative underlines a collaborative approach to fortify the agricultural backbone of the region against climactic adversities.
