Baileys Champion Dairy Cow Competition Returns to Virginia Show
Diageo Ireland, in collaboration with its cream supplier Tirlán, has announced the revival of the Baileys Champion Dairy Cow competition. This event, which highlights the high quality of Irish dairy cream, will occur at the Virginia Show on August 19, 2026. The competition serves as a platform to showcase the excellence of Holstein Friesian dairy herds across the country.
The official launch of this year's competition was held at the Diageo Baileys site in Dublin, with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, presiding over the event. He emphasized the importance of such traditions in celebrating the high standards of animal care and the vital role of agriculture in rural Ireland. He remarked, "The return of this annual event is a reminder of the deep-rooted tradition and pride that underpins Ireland’s dairy sector."
Shane Kelly, corporate relations director at Diageo Ireland, described the competition as one of the most tangible expressions of Baileys’ Irish credentials. "The cream that goes into every bottle starts with exceptional breeding, careful herd management and a deep pride in craft - qualities that this competition celebrates," he stated.
Carol Power, senior sales manager at Tirlán, added that the event shines a spotlight on dairy breeding excellence and the dedication of breeders and their families, many of whom have been involved in the competition for generations.
The competition is open to members of both the Irish Holstein Friesian Association and Holstein NI. The deadline for entries is August 12, 2026. The top prize, the Diageo Baileys Champion, includes a cash reward of €3,000 and the Virginia Milk Products Cup. Additional prizes include €1,500 for the Reserve Champion and €800 for the Honourable Mention. There are also several other category prizes, such as Junior Cows in their second lactation, with a total prize fund of €1,550, and the Best-Heifer-in-Milk category offering a prize of €750 for the winner.
