Bahia Achieves Record High Milk Production, Retains Seventh National Rank

In the first quarter of 2026, Bahia's milk production reached a historic high of 161.1 million liters. This volume, the largest recorded since 1997 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), underscores Bahia's significance in the national dairy industry. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, milk acquisition in Bahia increased by 3.0%, and by 3.6% compared to the last quarter of 2025.

Despite only accounting for 2.4% of national milk production, Bahia retained its position as the seventh-largest producer in Brazil. The national context also saw a record, with Brazil acquiring 6.781 billion liters of milk in the same period. This context highlights Bahia's ability to keep pace with the formal market's expansion.

Beyond milk, Bahia's cattle slaughter reached 349,469 heads, marking the best first quarter since the start of the historical series, with a 4.9% increase compared to the same quarter in the previous year. However, there was a decrease compared to the preceding quarter. The poultry segment also saw its best performance since 2022, with growth both annually and quarterly. Meanwhile, pig slaughter expanded compared to the first quarter of 2025, despite a reduction from the previous quarter.

The only decline among the main livestock segments was in chicken egg production, though the decrease was minor in both annual and quarterly comparisons.

These results illustrate a diverse and expanding livestock industry in Bahia, with milk production standing out. The record further solidifies Bahia's role as a key player in Brazil's dairy sector, demonstrating its capacity to increase volumes without losing national market share.

As Brazil continues to hit historical marks in formal milk production, Bahia's trajectory shows that growth is not confined to the traditionally leading states. The next challenge for Bahia is not only to increase production but also to enhance its prominence within Brazil's dairy chain.
