Arla Foods Invests £29.5 Million in Swedish Skyr Production Line

Arla Foods, a major player in the dairy industry, has announced a significant investment of £29.5 million in a new skyr production line at its Linköping site in Sweden. This investment is aimed at responding to the growing popularity of skyr, a traditional Icelandic cultured dairy product. Arla's decision aligns with its long-term strategy to cater to the increasing demand for high-protein, low-fat products across Europe.

According to Arla, the demand for skyr has been growing annually at an average rate of 8% in Europe from 2022 to 2024, and similar growth is anticipated until 2030. The new production line will primarily serve the Swedish market, where consumer interest in such products has risen significantly. This development will solidify Linköping's position as a key hub in Arla's Swedish operations.

The new skyr production line is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2028. It will enhance Arla's overall production capacity, supporting existing facilities in Denmark, Finland, and Germany. The Linköping dairy, which employs around 290 people, is currently Sweden's largest specialist dairy, producing over 280 different dairy products. With this new investment, skyr will be added to the list of products manufactured at the site.

David Boulanger, Arla's executive vice-president of supply chain, expressed enthusiasm for the investment, highlighting the high and growing consumer demand for skyr. He emphasized the dedication of Arla's Swedish farmer owners to produce with a lower carbon footprint and the company's expertise in transforming milk into high-protein skyr products.

This strategic investment by Arla is expected to secure future growth in the skyr category, reinforcing the company's commitment to meeting consumer demands and strengthening its market position.
