A report found nearly 90% of Delhi dairies unauthorised and waste-generating

The assessment covered 557 dairy-related units across Delhi. Their combined livestock population exceeded 120,000 cattle, while daily waste generation was estimated at 1,500 metric tonnes.

Only 11 units were identified as authorised commercial dairies. They housed 60,210 cattle and accounted for 734 metric tonnes of waste per day. Four authorised gaushalas contained 19,638 cattle and produced 240 metric tonnes daily.

The report also recorded 42 private gaushalas, with 20,776 cattle and daily waste of 252 metric tonnes. Taken together, the authorised commercial dairies and gaushalas represented 57 of the 557 assessed units. The report said Delhi had more than 45 unregulated operations for every authorised dairy.

Waste and drainage

Municipal and environmental authorities said many informal dairies lacked adequate waste-management facilities. Cow dung, water used for washing and other organic refuse were discharged into open storm drains and sewer lines, where they caused recurring blockages and unpleasant odours.

The authorities also said untreated effluent eventually entered the Yamuna River, contributing to serious deterioration in water quality. The report linked informal dairying to additional public-health and safety concerns.

It stated that unlicensed operators often released cattle onto major roads and flyovers after milking, disrupting traffic and contributing to road accidents. It also described cattle being kept near open sewage or industrial runoff, and linked unlicensed facilities to the production of synthetic milk and adulterated paneer containing starch, chemical neutralisers and refined oils.
