Northern Ireland's Dairy Sector Poised for Prosperity in 2025

The dairy sector in Northern Ireland is gearing up for a year of significant potential in 2025, as highlighted by Ian Stevenson, the chief executive of the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland (DCNI). According to a recent outlook report from Andersons Farm Business Consultancy, the dairy industry is set to experience a positive 12 months.
Stevenson points out that while tackling weather resilience and legislative compliance remains challenging, a consistent demand for high-quality milk and dairy products is expected to bolster the industry’s profitability. "Within the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland, we recognize the multifaceted importance of our dairy sector," said Stevenson, emphasizing its essential role in the rural economy, way-of-life, and broader society.
The contribution the dairy sector makes to Northern Ireland’s economy is vital, both in terms of farm output and job creation, as well as the value-addition by the processing industry. Stevenson added, "This significance extends beyond economic impact, showcasing dairy's potential to positively influence rural communities, the countryside, and the environment."
Looking toward the future, sustainability emerges as a central tenet for the sector’s growth. The sector must lead by example in sustainability, a theme interwoven with economic, environmental, and social elements. The DCNI has actively demonstrated its commitment through initiatives like the European Union Sustainable Dairy programme.
Furthermore, the recent Paris Dairy Declaration underscores the international commitment to sustainable dairy practices. As Northern Ireland anticipates declaring 2025 as its Year of the Environment, integrating a Climate Action Plan will further shape the dairy sector’s evolution.
Northern Ireland's dairy processors are already aligning with these goals by offering sustainability payments linked to farmers' practices. Stevenson emphasizes the necessity of collaboration with the Stormont Executive to sustain these advancements, ensuring the dairy sector continues to fulfill its economic and social commitments in the future.
