Nepal to Consider Import of Indian Dairy Products Amid Export Concerns

India has raised concerns regarding the obstacles faced by its milk exporters in Nepal. In response, Nepal has agreed to consider facilitating the import of specific milk products, such as whey and cheese, which are not significantly produced within Nepal.

The discussions took place during the India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting on Trade, Transit, and Cooperation to Combat Unauthorised Trade, held in Kathmandu on January 10-11. According to an official statement, Nepal has been receptive to India's requests regarding the import of milk products not adequately produced locally, like whey and cheese.

Aside from dairy imports, the two countries examined reviews of the Treaty of Transit and the Treaty of Trade, alongside potential amendments to existing agreements. The deliberations included topics like the harmonisation of standards and the development of trade infrastructure, with the electrification of the Raxaul-Birgunj rail line being a chief concern.

Discussions also covered mutual market access, intellectual property rights, and customs duty issues. Additionally, upon Nepal's request, India agreed to apply its maximum axle weight limits for Nepali cargo vehicles in transit through the Kakarbhitta (Nepal) Banglabandha (Bangladesh) route via Phulbari (India). The axle weight limit for two-axle vehicles will be 18.5 tonnes and 28 tonnes for three-axle vehicles, according to Indian road transport regulations.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal led the Indian delegation, while his Nepali counterpart was Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Gobinda Bahadur Karkee.
