This collaboration aims to develop a functional biomass protein derived fr om Fonterra’s lactose, thereby creating additional value from milk, which has long been the cornerstone of Fonterra’s business.

The alternative protein sector is rapidly gaining traction, driven by increasing consumer awareness around health and sustainability. According to data from Deloitte, the global market for alternative proteins is valued at USD 14 billion, with an impressive growth rate of 10 percent annually. While Australia has been slower to embrace this shift, Fonterra is positioning itself to lead the way in New Zealand and beyond.

Superbrewed Food, formerly known as White Dog Labs, is a Delaware-based company specializing in microbial fermentation technology. The company has developed a patented Postbiotic Cultured Protein, a non-GMO, allergen-free, nutrient-dense biomass protein that received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March. This innovative ingredient represents a significant advancement in the production of alternative proteins.

Chris Ireland, Fonterra’s General Manager for Innovation Partnerships, emphasized that while dairy remains central to the company’s operations, expanding into new ingredient technologies aligns with Fonterra’s mission to provide sustainable and nutritional solutions globally. “The target protein ingredient is a high protein and non-GMO product that offers significant functionality. It is particularly suitable for food and beverage applications wh ere Fonterra has established a strong customer base and technical expertise,” Ireland stated.

Ireland further highlighted that Superbrewed’s pioneering technology complements Fonterra’s objectives, allowing the company to meet evolving consumer demands with innovative nutrition solutions. The partnership will leverage Fonterra’s extensive experience in dairy processing and ingredient development to advance the production of Superbrewed’s Postbiotic Cultured Protein.

Superbrewed Food’s CEO, Bryan Tracy, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that Fonterra’s involvement is a key milestone in bringing Postbiotic Cultured Protein to a broader market. “Partnering with a company of Fonterra’s stature underscores the value of our product and represents a crucial step in expanding our range of biomass ingredients, contributing to more sustainable food production,” Tracy remarked.

This collaboration marks Fonterra’s significant foray into the alternative protein market, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability while reinforcing its leadership position in the global dairy industry.
